Mercedes and Nvidia extended their driving partnership. No car has a new date
The companies will keep building urban driver-assistance on Mercedes software, Nvidia’s in-car computer and a safety stack called Halos. The announcement is for the next decade. It does not name a model year, a city, or a car that will drive itself.

Mercedes-Benz and Nvidia said on 16 October that they are extending their partnership on automated driving. Mercedes brings the car and its MB.OS software, which is meant to take new driving functions and updates over the air. Nvidia brings Hyperion, the in-car computer and sensor layout, and Alpamayo, which it describes as a full stack of driving software with reasoning, for urban point-to-point assistance, active safety and automated parking. Halos, the safety system Nvidia has also attached to humanoid work, is in this agreement as a second stack: redundancy and limits alongside the Mercedes safety design.
Jörg Burzer, the Mercedes board member for technology, said Nvidia is the company’s most important partner in automated driving, and that together they had already built what he called the first Mercedes assistance system for urban point-to-point driving “for the western world.” That is his description of a system that exists. The new announcement is an extension, not a claim that a further system has been switched on. The headline the companies used puts the work in the next decade. A decade is not a delivery quarter.
Assistance is not a driverless car
Point-to-point urban assistance, as the release uses the phrase, is a system that helps a driver through a city, not a car that is allowed to go out alone. The release does not name the next model, the year it would reach customers, the roads it would be permitted on, or what happens when the sensor disagrees with the map. Halos is a name for a parallel set of checks. It is not, in this announcement, a published record of interventions, misses or miles.
The machine-economy fact is that the computer in the car is now part of the same Nvidia safety language as the computer in a humanoid. That is a supplier choice, not a proof that either machine is safe. A reader who wants a date will not find one. The document is an agreement to keep building, with the harder claims — a city, a permit, a car without a person ready to take over — left for later.
